Ground resistance is a critical indicator reflecting whether an earthing system meets regulatory requirements. For grounding devices, lower ground resistance is preferable. Lower resistance enables faster dissipation of current, reducing step voltage and touch voltage hazards. Key factors influencing ground resistance include soil resistivity, the size/shape/burial depth of grounding electrodes, and connections between leads and electrodes. Among these, soil resistivity plays the decisive role. Therefore, studying factors affecting soil resistivity, effectively improving it, and accurately measuring it are essential for proper grounding system design.

Main Factors Affecting Soil Resistivity:

1.Conductive Ion Concentration & Moisture Content: Presence of dissolved salts and water content in soil.

2.Soil Type: Composition (e.g., clay, sand, loam).

3.Temperature: Resistivity typically increases as temperature drops below freezing.

4.Soil Compaction: Density and compactness of the soil.

5.Seasonal Variations: Changes due to weather patterns (rain, frost, drought).

Key Methods to Reduce Soil Resistivity:

Soil Replacement Method: Replacing high-resistivity soil around the electrode with low-resistivity soil/clay. Labor-intensive but highly effective for problematic soils.

Earth Enhancement Compound (EEC) Method: Applying specialized compounds around the electrode to improve conductivity via diffusion and penetration.

Primary Soil Resistivity Measurement Methods:

Common methods include Soil Sample Analysis, Two-Point Method, Three-Point Method, and the Wenner Method (Four-Point Method). The Wenner Method is the most reliable and widely used technique for soil resistivity measurement.

ETCR EM3100C Ground Resistance / Soil Resistivity Tester

Also known as a Digital Earth Resistance Tester, Earth Electrode Tester, Soil Resistivity Meter, or 2/3/4-Wire Ground Resistance Tester, this instrument measures ground resistance, soil resistivity, and earth voltage. Featuring digital microprocessor technology, it utilizes the Wenner Method (4-Point), 3-Point Method, and Simplified 2-Point Method for resistance testing. Incorporating FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) and AFC (Automatic Frequency Control) technologies, it automatically identifies electrical interference and selects the optimal test frequency to minimize noise, ensuring highly accurate readings. Widely used in power utilities, telecommunications, meteorology, construction, lightning protection, and industrial electrical systems.
